Changing the narrative for my trailer.

Unfortunately, due to the genre of the film In which I have chosen, and the major theme of horror, I have had to down grade my narrative.

After contacting many churches, I was unable to find a location which would let my film my trailer. Due to this I have decided to still include a church within my film, however I will have to incorporate it into the background of my film setting instead. Moreover this actually enhances the main setting of a graveyard, which was my first idea to begin with.

The costume within my trailer has also had to change now, therefore to make it more suitable for the genre I am going for. So instead of a priest I will use a psychiatrist which will act as the secondary character within my film. It will also result in the feel of isolation in which I originally wanted to go for, as this character will ask questions towards the main character frank.

The character of 'IT' played by actor, Anna Lowe, will still be maintained within my film, however she will be wearing a gas mask as a prop rather than have her hair in her face and blood. She will also be wearing a vintage style piece of clothing, which I have purchased from a local charity shop. ( This inspiration for donating money in exchange for props, was actually inspired by the TV soap, coronation street, as they do the same thing for props, or at least the majority of them.)

Here is my new narrative:

I have created the character Frank. Frank is a post-modern person, who entails modern thoughts. He constantly questions his reality, and due to this internal mindset, he is forced to relieve his thoughts externally to a professional.

The secondary character for my film, is a Dr who is a female, there is no physical attributes presented by this character, as she is only there to produce relieve Frank of his thoughts, and make him reveal them to the viewer.

The third character to my film, is IT. IT is a female, who is internally held/ suppressed within Franks mind, she irritates him in his dreams and turns them into a modern nightmare.

Narrative. Plot. Story.

This film begins with the introduction of the person Frank. Gradually there is the slow introduction into how he has been having dreams which turn to nightmares, and each nightmare entails the thrilling character IT. Who forces him to believe he is a modern person, with a post-modern body.

From the increasing amounts of nightmares, suggesting more and more of a historic persona, Frank gradually turns crazy, and influences his own dress, and persona to become this other modern person.

However from attending a psychiatrist, this doctor researches where this modern persona has come from, and reveals that there is actually a person with the same name as Frank, however they died long ago in a nuclear war.

Frank therefore has to gradually work his way through the nightmares and find what 'IT', wants from him.

Obviously all this narrative will not be able to be made apparent from this one trailer, so I will only include the inclusive, suspense and action filled bits of the films narrative, to engage the viewer to watch it, and go on to buy the film or cinema ticket.

title opening - and production

I have show the use of my demonic symbol research, and I have created my own symbol from the research and added a creepy gothic/ old grainy film effect to give it its spookiness.

Konami are my style model film Silent hill's, publishers. The production began with Davis Films in Toronto, Ontario. It was Developed and published by KONAMI themselves.

The silent hill franchise has pioneered the survival horror video game Silent hill, this game just as the film, gives players and viewers the visceral fear, haunting monsters, a twisted storyline and an overall blurred reality.

Here is a clip from the game Silent hill:downpour

I have purchased the entire game collection for silent hill, and I have extensively researched the game.

The idea of questioning reality and the dimensions within it, and the position of the main character within the story and the involvement of demonic and faithless religions, is extremely interesting to me, Hence the choice of silent hill as my style model, through the poster and the film.

I have used a logo from online, and I have manipulated it via Photoshop:
Firstly I have opened my konami style model logo, nex I have searched for a rusty looking texture and therefore added this as a layer ontop of my original layer. I then changed the opacity of the layer and then selected eraser tool and on a low opacity I erased some of the texture.
This is the texture above /\/\/\/\

Next I searched for a hand print made from blood and added this onto the original layers, then changing the opacity so it looks like someone is behind the logo, acting as a screen almost or a window.

Despite using all this, this will only be allowed to be used within my draft trailer, therefore once I have decided what this looks like within the draft trailer, I will be able to decide on whether I want something similar within my real trailer.

Creating my symbol

On photoshop I have created the demonic cross symbol, combined it with my title in a demonic font and used a illuminate suggestive triangle, to recreate my own demonic symbol.

Exploring

I have been researching ancient symbols and languages, as they portray a very demonic and mysterious effect when placed with the correct setting (my film), here are some examples of symbols I might use:

Main reference film/ style model

This is my MAIN style model, as it uses the correct/ most attractive group of conventions. The mis en scene in particular stands out to me, as I would like to use similar props, as in this film and similar symbol styles, to produce a demonic style to my film.

This is the main symbol they have used, and there is a brief explanation towards the symbol:

The following image is a screen shot from the film silent hill. I really like the style in which this has be portrayed, therefore I would like to make my title font style the same as this on a wall in blood.

The following image is a prop within silent hill, showing the same demonic symbol, i love the way the demonic symbol is represented in a scary and dramatic way, and it is CONSTANTLY shown on different props, such as on the box below:

Story/ narrative

My film is called Expire:

Within this, there are three main characters:

The priest:

possesed ghost girl/woman:

Frank:

(Hand drawing of Frank)

Frank wakes up within a church, in a tired afile://localhost/Users/lindonso6fz/Desktop/hand.jpgnd what appears to be a drugged state. He is confused as to where he is, why he is drugged and what the markings on his hands are.

Example of hand symbol

He realises he has a bible next to him, which has been ripped on the cover with blood. He rises from the church bench, and scatters around the floor, as he has a severe headache, he has no idea where he is, who he is or were he has come from.

He stumbles to his feet and looks around, he sees a door and stumbles to it. There appears to be no lock on the door, although the door will not open.

Aware this enterance is blocked, he looks for aother.

After finding various strange objects, Frank finds a priest, Frank beggs for help, although the priest see's the markings on his hands and fleas behind a door and locks it. Frank hears a strange voice whispering to him. He looks around and knowone is there.

Candles slowly blow out from the bottom of the church towards him, in time with an invisable set of footsteps.

Frank is scared, he busts the door down and holds it shut with his feet, as there is an intense scratching and banging noise on the door. It stops and there is a scream from the ghost girl.

Frank turns to see the priest, although he is dripping blood from his eyes and is now dead.

Frank goes out of the room with the priests book/bible for protection. It is dark, all you can see is a pair of hands on the bible, that are not Franks he drops the bible and runs.

There is chanting.

The last things you see is Franks eye before the girl Expires him.

Morining rises and they are knowhere to be seen.

Age ratings for a psychological thriller

psychological thrillers are normally based around the ages of 15+, and it is a sub genre therefore there is  more of a niche audience.

The age rating for this film is 15+, and the reason for this is because the content of this film is not disturbing enough for a higher rating, also there is no sexual content.

I have also researched what is actually portrayed within a 15+ film, and what is suitable.

my film location

I have come up with ideas of what i want my shot locations to look like, as most psychological thrillers have a distinct and isolated area, such as in shutter island, with an island. The reason for this is to enhance the suspense of isolation, more over to make this sub genre have its own individuality. It also helps the individuality of each psychological thriller more apparant. This distinct setting will be within a graveyard, as this is normally isolated and quiet, such as shutter islands island. The narrative of psychological thrillers are each different, and mine will be also.

Here are some thoughts as to what I want the setting to be like, and also the angle in which i want to approach it.

I will need a church to add to the enhancement of the isolated area, as this church will be run down or even shut, with no signs of society around.

I will need a cross shaped grave stone for my setting somewhere within my trailer, it compensates with the surroundings and adds to isolation, as there are no alive people within the surrounding.

This is both setting within the same environment and context.

locations of a psychological thriller

Locations of psychological thrillers from real media products within this genre:

Main types of horror films

There are several types of horror films, however I have decided to make my promotional package based up the psychological thriller sub genre of horror. As from watching several horror films, this sub genre is most appealing, and the ideology immersion and false realties is distinctly appealing.

The following are sub genres and genres of horror:

  • Slasher horror
Here are some examples of Slasher horror films (above)

Every slasher horror film has a victim, a killer and a bunch of weapons.
Although this is a successful genre, it only really makes money within the period of Halloween. And audiences don't really watch this genre for a second time. As there is always resolution and a sequel is out of the question.

  • Thriller/Action-Adventure horror- The thriller/ action genre normally entails a complex narrative, with the combination of misleading clues and pieces of evidence. This is a prime example of how suspense is built up for the audience. It will normally use a sudden twist within the plot and along side there will be a lot of action. Here is an example of a Action horror.
  • Psychological horror/Suspense
This is the genre in which I want to use for my film/ film trailer. The convention of this film are normally a slow suspense entailed narrative. They normally use a fragmented narrative, with a backstory that is untold. They normally have a paranormal sense to them, and the mise en scene is normally creepy and old. This genre also entails a lot of twists towards the narrative, with a complexity of jumpy and quick shots of a unknown subject/ character.

above are some examples of this sub-genre.
  • Paranormal horror
This particular sub genre of horror is a very popular theme within cinemas. People love to get scared, and especially from an unknown third person, with an unknown background. This sub genre typically has a dark atmospheric surrounding in both the setting and portrayed around the characters within the film.
Example of a recent paranormal horror.
